Level I Fieldwork: Physical Conditions
Memorial Healthcare - Durand, MI
January 2012 - April 2012
Setting: Orthopedic Outpatient Clinic
Diagnoses: Carpal Tunnel, Connective Tissue Disorder, Trigger Finger, Shoulder Impingement, Hemiparesis, Unlar Neuropathy, Bilateral Hand Weakness and Numbness, Shoulder Arthralgia, and Weakness in Hands from Arthritis
Ages: 18-71
Areas of Occupation Affected: Primarily ADLS/IADLS, Rest and Sleep, Work, Leisure, and Social Participation
Interventions: The most commonly used interventions were physical agent modalities, primarily ultrasound, paraffin, hot packs, and iontophoresis. Other treatment interventions include sensory re-education, PRE's, joint mobilization, stretching and strengthening, scar massage and deep tissue massage, tendon gliding exercises, and home exercise programs
My Role as a Level I Student: For my first fieldwork experience, I definitely feel like I was challenged. I was doing all documentation by the second week, all ultrasound treatments and deep tissue massages by the fifth or sixth week, and was doing entire treatment interventions by week nine or ten. Since I was given the opportunity to be very "hands on" from the beginning, I feel like I was able to learn a great deal and feel more confident in my abilities.
